Citrus Heights is located in Sacramento County. Just 16 miles from Sacramento, the city serves as something of a suburb. While still a new city, Citrus Heights is gaining in population. The 2020 census confirmed that 87,583 make Citrus Heights their home. That's up from the 83,301 residents documented in the 2010 census.

Interest in incorporating began in the 1980s, and gained ground over the next decade. Voters approved a measure to incorporate in November, 1996. That measure went into effect on the first day of 1997. On that same day, Citrus Heights became the fifth city to be found in Sacramento County. 

The establishment of city services commenced, and continued to be added to over time. By 2006, the city had its own police department. A number of shopping venues, including big-box stores, have established a presence in Citrus Heights. The expectation is that the city will continue to attract new residences, cementing its place in the county.
